Illegal chinese miners invade Ghana's Tano river basin, [HEARSAY], Ghana, 2015-07-01, VEDiC\FRZA chinese company allegedly having a concession to operate a surface mining along the Tano river expanded its operations into the whole basin. According to reports because of this the water became unavailable as a source of drinking water in the region, despite the river being the primary source of fresh water for the Ghana Water Company in the Brong Ahafo Region.
As locals started to demonstrate in and around Tano North district demanding preservation of their fresh water sources, local authorities claim that actually Tano North District has not given any permit to any Chinese mining company for conducting mining.
The number of illegal chinese miners are estimated as high as 50,000. Last year 200 chinese illegal miners had been deported, generating hostility between Ghana and Mainland China.
